Hi Hunter,
Yes the older models are lighter than today's, but will it have
sleeping accommodations for 5, bath facilities, and holding tanks
suitable for 5 people? Weren't these the items which caused the
formerly light units to become heavy? Is he interested in
refurbishing an older unit to accommodate a family of 5?>
I just threw it out. If I were looking for a used trailer I would get
an Airstream. They are lighter and more aerodynamic than the "box"
shape trailer.
Some have bunk beds, but I was serious when I suggested he bring a
tent along for the boys. I think they would enjoy it.
Oh yeah, tents can be great fun--in nice weather. Anywhere in the
United States a tent will not be fun for a year or more.
I may be wrong, but I generally think of Airstreams as designed for a
couple, not families. Don't get me wrong, I admire Airstreams, and
hope to someday have one. I just think that even an old Bambi is too
much for his tow vehicle with a load of kids and gear. Solo or a
couple perhaps.>
Well, his tow vehicle is definitely a problem.
Many families have covered many miles using an Airstream. They aren't
just for singles at all.
Lots of people on my list remember wonderful times camping with the
whole family back when, in their Airstream.
I can remember many wonderful times camping in less luxury than is
afforded by an old Airstream--for well under a year. For anything even
remotely approaching his time frame the wonderfulness would diminish
rapidly.
He will probably need to look at bunkhouse models, and a suitable tow
vehicle. Remember, they are planing to full-time in this for a year -
how much additional "stuff" will a family of 5 be putting into their
"home"? It all adds up.>
It's not that hard to make bunk beds in an Airstream, my old Argosy
had them.
The problem is going to be privacy for the teenage daughter, away from
the two boys. That would be the case in most trailers.
lol, All three children are reported to be under 12. He has numerous
problems that got lost in the discussion of his van as a tow vehicle, on my
list privacy for the young lady doesn't even rate in the top five. Along
with an unrealistic tow vehicle he has an unrealistic time frame and likely
an unrealistic budget. For example, after an extended vacation they're going
to build their home in 6 months? A smarter move would be to build the home
first and then vacation with the remaining time and money because both are
likely to be in short supply when the home is finished. He asked, "1. Are
we likely to remain sane in less than a 30ft trailer?" My answer would be no
even if his sanity wasn't questionable at the beginning of his one year
plan. I have been there and done that. For a single person a small travel
trailer can be reasonably comfortable for an extended period. Some couples
could be reasonably comfortable over an extended period. Others would be
experiencing serious strain. With 3 mid-sized kids it's a formula for
serious industrial strength stress.
