FYI, we just bought a Magellan Roadmate 2000 GPS, not having
convenient room in the car for DeLorme's Earthmate and necessary
laptop. First impressions: very favorable despite dinky screen.
Acquires birds faster, has good audible voice, and of course a cheap
price ($250). Tiny screen doesn't show as much detail, of course, but
well worth considering IMO. (BTW the software names our road corectly
- something DeLorme hasn't got right yet.)
After more use I will surely have some gripes, but first impressions
are all good.
YMMV

consider ease of use, accuracy, and reliability, important.

I don't see either one as being light years ahead of the other. They both
use the same databases. I've found that the laptop wortks great for trip
planning where the handheld untit works great for around town. I like the
big screen when I am on the road. I like the little screen when I am
tueling around. I really like the little screen when I am hiking.
But then...I'm like a junkie with this stuff right now. Maybe it will wear
off in a few years.
