There is a difference between the heat strip and the heat pump. I'll agree that the heat strips on RV A/Cs aren't very efficient, but I wouldn't be without the heat pumps. When the campground is supplying the electricity for the nightly fee (or a couple of dollars extra as do some) it's a lot cheaper to use the heat pumps than the propane for the furnace. Our heat pumps on both fivers paid for themselves in less than a year. They don't work well below 30 to 35 degrees, but one would want to use the furnace to heat the tanks in those conditions.
In the motorhome, as in the two fivers, we use an inexpensive ceramic heater in the bedrooms at night. It's quieter than the heat pump, uses less energy (even if we're not paying for it) and does a super job.
I see no reason why the OP needs to spend more than $20 on a little heater for his RV. Just make sure it has a thermostat and a tip-over shut off feature. Keep it away from walls, fabrics, etc. and it should do the job.
