I will be starting some road travels soon and have been trying to get
a handle on the available choices.
I will be on sporadic 3-4 day trips and an occasional 2-3 week trip.
I'll be traveling with horses, so metro areas will not be
destinations.

I believe my choices are satellite, aircards and cell phone
tethering. I have been unable to find a comparison across these
options for price, bandwidth, availability, etc. Google just hasn't
been my friend for this generalized topic

Any suggestions?

Barry, what LZ said.

Out East, I had good cell service everywhere.

Once I got West, I was "very" thankful for my HughesNet dish. 3 weeks in the
Gunnison area, with no cell service, unless I drove 12 miles or more.
Mexican Hat, no cell service for miles. Jacob Lake, AZ. Zero cell service,
but I'm online with the HughesNet system. It's up to you, the Hughes system
is expensive, and unless you want to use it as your connection at home may
not be worth the $$$$.
