So, all you know is that a particular post was traced. That makes you
an expert, and endows you with the certain knowledge that all emails
can be instantly traced to the sender. You don't even know enough to
know how ridiculous such a claim is.
Actually I know a lot more than that but in this case it was a post to a newsgroup, not an e-mail and it was sent through a server that keeps its posters anonymous (a university).
Uh, huh. The story changes. Not an email,
Here's the original post.
No, here's the original post:

If he was interested in disappearing her wouldn't have sent 500 e-mails to the kooky perfesser and confessed in detail.
He had already disappeared. He was corresponding with Tracey under an
assumed name, and wasn't located until five days before being brought
here. Previous attempts to locate him had failed. That included one
attempt in which Tracey persuaded him to call the Ramseys and they
(with the Ramseys cooperation, of course) tried to trace the call.
Apparently caller ID doesn't work reliably from Thailand.
500 e-mails is enough to track someone to an address.
Heh. Sure, after you subpoena the ISP in Thailand, assuming it hasn't
gone through a couple of remailers. Of course, it probably turns out
to be an internet cafe.
Are you saying the same hacker who found the poster from 1 newsgroup post couldn't track him through 500 e-mails?
If that is what you are claiming, come right out and say it, don't beat around the bush.

Remember now? We were discussing your contention that Karr could have
easily been located through his emails. Tell you what - get your $10
superhero to identify just one of the anonymous remailers who post
propaganda here. If he can do that, I can get work for him.
He does it all the time and he certainly doesn't need job offers from you. He's been light years ahead of your expertise since he was in college. Now he teaches computer science. His father ran the computer systems for a fortune 500 company for 30 years.
<snip>
A good hacker gets in where he wants to. Are you saying that someone with experience can't get a trace with 500 e-mails to work with?
Yes, if the emailer is trying to hide, especially in another country.
You really think Karr is a computer expert? Strange he never sought work in that field. I'm sure it pays better than teaching in a foreign Christian school.
Have you ever owned a Hack Tracer?
There are several such programs. Some are free. One is built into the
paid version of Zonealarm. None are magic. Most believe what they're
told on a traceroute, which you can do yourself from the command line.
(On *nix systems - may not be available with XP Home.) Hack Tracer,
btw, is not considered one of the better ones.
Strange, Sharp told me it was taken out of service years ago. I had a subscription and traced quite a number of people who were pinging my computer. When I went to renew it, Sharp said it was no longer available. Apparently it worked too well and led to many acrimonious flame wars.
If you can do this, you can track someone down for me and I'll give you $10 per instance.
Are we in business?
At that price? I assume you're being ignorant, not deliberately
insulting.
IOW, you don't know how to do it? If you can, what IS your asking price for a few seconds of work?
<G> Anyone with Google and a couple of minutes to spare can find
things like Hack Tracer. As for whether I know how to trace an out of
country email from someone who knows how to hide, no, I don't. Neither
does your $10 hacker. Or Hack Tracer.
I wouldn't bet money on it. Do you KNOW for a fact that Karr is an expert on hiding his identity? He seemed quite stupid to me.
I didn't pay a fee and the guy did it strictly as a favor because the guy I wanted to locate had sent forged posts using my name.
As you probably remember, I've been on W-2 full time for a while now,
but when I was consulting, I didn't do "a few seconds of work." My
last demand rate (rate for short-term, unscheduled work) was $160/hr,
two hours minimum. That's relatively cheap, as consulting goes, and no
charge for travel time within 30 miles.
He wasn't as clever as he thought he was.
