I updated the Header for You.
I've got a question not concerning backup. I've never been able get a
definitive answer. If I use the Move command to move whole directories,
does Windows XP update the registry pointers for program and data
locations, or do you have to reinstall everything to get the pointers
changed.
I want to create a new partition and make a D: drive for programs and
data, but I don't want to have to uninstall and reinstall everything to
do it.

The move command, actually moves the data from one location to another. It doesn't leave a copy behind as the "Copy" command does. Be careful here...
With the cheapness of USB external drives, it would make more sense to put your data on it than to keep everything on one hard drive with 2 labels. If you lose the drive, your still losing your data.
Frank can speak for himself, but I doubt that he's doing it for data protection. Most likely he's doing it to add one more level to the filing cabinet for organizational purposes.
And isn't there a program that will let you move stuff, and take care of the pointers so that it still works? In fact, I know there is - I just can't remember what it is.

Theory don't mean squat if it don't work.
