I'm still for cloning. Do a full clone as frequently or infrequently as you like, and then do data backups whenever you want with batch files tied to a shortcut on the desktop.

No matter how I do data backups, I still want a cloned disk ready to go when the main drive fails or gets squirrely. I've got lots of programs, old reference stuff collected over the years from the net, Data CDs and DVDs for stuff like SA and Topo USA copied to the HD, and lots of custom settings for both Windows and all those programs, and hacks to many of those programs - and I don't want to have to reinstall all that stuff when the HD goes south.

At the moment my desktop is protected that way, and I'm hoping the laptop will last until I get back from an upcoming trip, hoping that I get a handle on this laptop USB/Ghost business, and then I'll do the same to the laptop.

But I'm pretty much stuck on Ghost - it's worked flawlessly since about 1996.

Well, I chumped off and bought a package, with some other
software, and probably paid too much. It purports to be a
complete solution. I'm gonna give it a try.

Ghost will be my backup, so to speak.

But hey, a clone *is* a backup. It may take 6 or 7 hours. But
if you can depend on the process working by itself, all that
happens while you sleep.

I've got an 80G disk with about 50G on it. It takes a little over an hour - but that's across IDE, not USB.

And I found my Ghost 2003 somewhere on the web a year or two ago for under $10. The 80G HD was $55 (but it was a desktop drive).

For the laptop, all I've got so far is the USB case for 12 bucks including shipping, and an old 6G drive. Until I get a laptop drive of sufficient size, I can't proceed with laptop Ghosting.

Frank's bringing his laptop drive along on the upcoming trip, and we plan to figure this out in some CG or flatspot along the Mother Road.

The only thing that remains is to actually see the thing boot. I have no doubt that 2003 will clone it.

Theory don't mean squat if it don't work.
