Why pay Symantec for the Norton AV software and pay them a yearly

I thought the free AGV was no longer available? I tried to get it a year ago but they never sent the secret code to open it. Do you have a free firewall to recommend? I really would like to trash the McAfee but I need a firewall, especially now that the WiFi in the campground is not secured.

Another current case in point is OpenOffice. Compare its features to MS
Office and you have about 95 percent of the functionality, including 100
percent of the features that I use in my business. Compare the price --
OO is free ($0.00) and MSO is expen$ive (over $400 for the same
functionality) -- and the choice seems clear to me. Plus the fact that I
use a lot of checkboxes in some of my work and OO handles them in a
superior way.

When my hard drive died and I couldn't get home for 10 days to load in my own software, I downloaded Open Office. It opened WP files but couldn't save in WP. I was completely unimpressed with Open Office. I couldn't wait until I got home and put back my Word Perfect. If Open Office is "better" than Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office is total drek. I can save WP files in *.doc format to send to whomever needs it.

Also software features vary within function groups. I pay for and use the
commercial Agent software when I need to do newsgroup stuff in batches or
in the background or offline.

I use the one in Mozilla Suite. I like it better than Agent. It's free, too.

I'm not a fan of anything Microsoft. I use their operating system. While I was fulltiming I learned the hard way that Microsoft's programs came with holes. If I didn't have an internet connection to download patches, I couldn't even use some of their stuff of the box. I agree with you about not having to use Microsoft products.
