Use a USB wireless and you won't need to open the case for a card. (My
Belkin has a stand and about 6 foot extension cord for easy placement)
Routers are cheap as dirt. I would use a router, but you may be able to
connect without a router using Network Neighborhood. As long as each
machine can see the other, no problem. The simplest way is to use shared
folders on each machine. On each machine, make a shared folder (password
protected) and place files to be transferred into the folder. Machine "A"
should see machine "B", and have access to the shared folder. The shared
folder will appear like a drive in Network Neighborhood. The shared
folders must be prepared on each machine beforehand. You can make a
shortcut and manipulate files between the shared folders easily.
Another option is to use a router and a virtual desktop (VPN/VNC) program to
run both machines from one machine. The secondary desktop will be visible
and you can do most anything from a single machine. (Hint; make one
desktop a different color to prevent confusion.) I run my storage machine
this way. You don't need a monitor, but need a keyboard and mouse
connected. I run VPN on the storage machine (loads at boot) and when
queried, a client is downloaded to the accessing machine. You dial in using
your browser and can make a shortcut if the storage machine has a permanent
IP. I still run '98 on the storage machine. I use a router, but should
work peer-to-peer wirelessly. These programs are cross-platform capable;
you can access a mac or linxx machine from a Win box, no problem.
Of course the first 9 folks to answer will display 12 differing viewpoints.

I want to network - wirelessly - my desktop (Win 2000 Pro) and my laptop
(Win XP Home).
No broadband or other internet connection is required. All I want to do is
exchange files. Anything else is gravy.
The laptop is wireless capable already.
The desktop needs a card.
Frank has already provided me with info on how to this with two XP
machines.
The question is:
Can I just buy a $30 card for the desktop and do this, or do I need a
router because the desktop is not XP?

Theory don't mean squat if it don't work.
