I'm amazed that in all the answers you got so far, NOBODY has asked
the simple question, if it is not XP, what the heck is it?!?!?
He said Windows 2000 in his post. Read it again..
Ben
Where do you see win2k in the above? all I see is "is not XP"....
The first line, which says:
"I want to network - wirelessly - my desktop (Win 2000 Pro) and my
laptop (Win XP Home)."
I still think that once the Advance setup for the available wireless
networks shows up when it detects the other card, that the setup in
2000k is similar enough to XP to work.
If not, I guess I'll have to make an early road trip and help him get it
working so he can move his map files from desktop to laptop.
If it doesn't work on 2000, you can just send me a check for the useless card.
Meanwhile, I'm sneaker-netting the files with a half-gig flash drive. That works OK for the Delorme files, but the large number of UsaPhotoMap files requires some organization and pre-processing which I'd rather not be bothered with.
And I haven't done - and won't be doing any time soon - testing, but the flash drive seems to have a max file number limit even when the drive is not full.
BTW. SA2007 is available for preorder. Ship date is Aug 16th. Use
promo code 8727 for a 20% discount.
Other than a claimed gazillion map corrections, I can't find that it has anything that 2006 or Topo 6 doesn't have. And like all upgrades before it, I'm confident it'll be bigger and slower. Does it have anything I've overlooked that I really need (want, I should say)?
And although I'm trying to transition from "Cheapass" to "Halfass Big Spender", I'm having trouble overcoming lifetime habits. But I did manage to force myself to buy a $20 sleeping bag from Walmart that I don't really "need".
A Dlink router will cost the same as a wireless card for your desktop,
and will be much easier to manage. A DI524 can be had for about $50.
Well, crap. Decisions, decisions.
Infrared ???..
Cut Out The Middleman & Beam To Your Devices
The same infrared technology that lets you change the channel on your television without getting off the couch can help you print and transfer files between your portable and desktop computer, without the need for messy wires. You can also use IR (infrared) to synchronize data between your PC and PDA (personal digital assistant) and print directly to an IR-equipped printer from an IR-enabled digital camera.
Although this may sound cutting edge, IR has been around since 1996. Since then, all major input device manufacturers have both released and discontinued wireless IR keyboards and mice, replacing them with RF (radio frequency), which doesn't have the line-of-sight limitation inherent to IR.
Although IR input devices are all but gone from store shelves, and some companies have seemed to abandon their IR products, IR still gives you a relatively inexpensive, wireless means to print from portable devices and transfer files between your desktop and portable computer. We'll run down the hardware you need to take advantage of IR technology and show you how to configure Windows to print and transfer files through IR.
