so i wonder how the installation, configuration and
set-up of EL DSL went. what issues popped up and how easily solved
were they?
No "issues." Self installation by this ol' grandma. Sign the
Sprint/Embarq contract, wait for the external modem to arrive (in a
few days), unpack modem, and follow easy directions. A "y" dongle
goes on the jack where you install red Ethernet cable and a
telephone. The other three or four dongles (included) go on the other
phone jacks around the house. Everything you need is in the box.
Nothing else to buy -- unless you don't have an Ethernet plug in you
PC and/or want USB. I'm not sure about the latter as it's not the
usual setup, and the USB connector is not included IIRC.
Next install Earthlink setup software on included CD. Follow
directions again, making sure to check existing Earthlink customer.
Have a new name and password ready. I used that one only to sign up,
retaining my old Earthlink names for regular usage. With the new name
and use of the "regular" (not web-based Total Access) OE email and
NGs, I do have to remember who I am for what purpose. <g>
Sprint -- now Embarq -- would have given me a Lynksys "b" router, but
I already have one that is not installed. A "g" router is not free.
Maybe someday I will as I use the desktop most all the time and
rarely use the laptop.
The router may have been part of an offer from a Sprint "get $19.95
HiSpeed" meeting we were invited to as good credit, long-term Sprint
phone co. users. BTW, this had nothing to do with Sprint PCS cell
phones -- only Sprint land line service.
have either of you installed a wi-fi system at your
homes using the EL DSL feed? any issues there?
No, see router mention above.
one of my 'problems' with DSL, anyone's DSL, is that the computer
and home telephone jack are in the same room here. i know that DSL
involves the use of a filter or dongle inserted into the phone
jack.
can i use a 'Y' connector to also attach my telephone to that same
jack...DSL out of one branch, telephone out of the other? the EL
DSL FAQ page indicates that in those situations 'special' wiring
may be needed. not sure what 'special' means and there's no way
i'm not gonna call EL tech support for that. i'm no stranger to
wiring up phone jacks but have zero practical experience with DSL
or its 'special' wiring needs.
No special anything needed. Ethernet wire and dongles included with
Sprint modem package. Reading about "whats" and "hows" was much more
frightening and confusing than reality. Just do it.
The below link may or may not help. Of course, my info basically
hinges on you being a customer of Sprint/Embarq.
