but i do place higher value on first-person commentary than internet
reviews and so i wonder how the installation, configuration and set-up
of EL DSL went. what issues popped up and how easily solved were
they? have either of you installed a wi-fi system at your homes using
the EL DSL feed? any issues there?
Let me start by saying I really had no choice. The only high-speed
access in this area (other than satellite, of course) was
Sprint/Earthlink DSL. I had been waiting for it and got it as soon as it
was available. I was probably one of the first few people in the area to
have it.
The phone guys came and asked me which jack I wanted to plug my modem
into. Then they went out to the bridge and attached something there to
make it work. They said this would be the only jack I could use for DSL.
EL now sends out the modem and other equipment for a self-install.
i'm assuming that includes X number of dongles/filters.
one of my 'problems' with DSL, anyone's DSL, is that the computer and
home telephone jack are in the same room here. i know that DSL
involves the use of a filter or dongle inserted into the phone jack.
can i use a 'Y' connector to also attach my telephone to that same
jack...DSL out of one branch, telephone out of the other?
As to whether you could Y-connect a phone to the same jack, I don't
know, but I also can't imagine why not. The phone uses a different
frequency on the same line, so I can't see why it would make any
difference whether it was hooked up there or somewhere else on the same
line. If it's really important to you, say so and I'll try it later this
afternoon and report back to you.
i'd appreciate that, GB, if you don't mind.
As far as how the rest of the installation went, there was no problem. I
did have a problem later, but it was determined to be a bad modem (went
bad after using for a while -- I have no idea why), but the phone guy
swapped it out (no charge) and it's been fine ever since.
My wife and I both have laptops and are connected by Wi-Fi and don't
really even think about it. We just use it.
did you set up your wi-fi or did the techs that came out for the DSL
install?
When we finish the new house "next door" (connected) and move over
there, I'll probably install a pair of those Netgear devices that use
the house wiring to carry the network signal anywhere in the house, just
to make sure I have full wireless coverage in both houses and at the RV
site.
If I have a technical problem with the line or the hardware, I call
Sprint. If I have a problem that seems access-related, I call Earthlink.
Both have been helpful when I've called them. I really have no
complaints about any of it.
I guess I'd have to say I'm completely happy with my Sprint/EL/DSL/Wi-Fi
service. As is probably obvious, I use it frequently <g>....
HTH.
