Yup. If you have a cassette deck, get one of those adapters that slide
in where you put the tape, then plug it into the laptop. Control the
volume from your regular radio. Only a couple of bucks at Wally world.
One of those came with my XM Roady. I couldn't stand it -- the tape
drive ran all the time and I could hear it clicking like it was trying
to reverse.
If you don't have a
cassette deck, they also make an FM transmitter (Best Buy has 'em) for
$20-30 bucks. They send the signal to your FM radio. I tend to be
leery of anything transmitting, though. Tried one several years ago,
it was a POS. Improvements have probably been made I suppose.
I have one, a Belkin. It uses two AAA batteries. I use rechargeables and
carry extras and a recharger with me -- a pair will last about 8 hours
of continuous use. The thing works great. The only caveat about using it
with a GPS is that it is used to a stereo signal coming into it, so I
don't know how that would translate to a GPS output.
OTOH, are you (Tim) sure there's not a volume control on a menu
somewhere? My GPS has one -- and I have it set only at a moderate level
and can hear it just fine while driving. Any louder is *too* loud for
comfort.

Some laptops are notoriously low volume units. I can barely hear the
heavy breathing on my favorite movies sometimes!<g>
