Re: RV Break-ins/Theft - Any Advice?

We'll always be in the RV overnight, so it's just parking during the
day while out visiting, shopping or siteseeing that I am wondering
about. I am not sure how frequently RVs are targeted in comparison to
regular cars.

Any advice you seasoned RVers can provide would be much appreciated!

We've been half timing for 5 years, using the 33' motorhome as our
transportation, with only one problem, that being a failed attempt to
break through a side window the second day we were parked in a pay
parking lot at the ferry stop in Algiers, across the Mississippi from
the New Orleans French Quarter. They did not get in, but bent the
window center support a bit trying. We did not go back there for a
planned third day.... The parking attendants were always there in the
morning to collect the money...but never there when we returned before
dark to return to our campground.

We do not tow a car, so we take and park the motorhome where we want to
go. We seldom want to go to a really run down section of town, and might
change our mind if we found ourselves in a planned destination like
that. Algiers was run down...but we thought the pay lot would provide
security. WRONG! So far we have not used an alarm on the RV....but in
the absence of security on the ground, an alarm does very little.

We pull all curtains as soon as we park....stuff unseen is the best way
to avoid tempting thieves. We keep ALL locks on the basement storage
lockers locked unless we are in them getting stuff in or out, AND are
careful to keep all windows locked unless we have them open. We lock
close and lock windows, and both deadbolt and door latch locks when we
leave. Light valuables like cellphone, camera, GPS go with us. The
others are stored out of sight from someone breaking in the door...only
to delay them a bit, make them look. We do not travel with expensive
jewelry and fancy stuff we can do without that would advertise "wealth"
to folks passing on the street while we're leaving.

Honestly...I'm more afraid of attracting hijackers, muggers and holdup
artists than folks breaking in while we're away. These are the folks
that will hurt us. The rest is just..."stuff". Protect as best you
can, and live your life.

My opinion,
