No....I don't live in Hercules. That nice city is on the opposite side
of this county from me. I live in Brentwood in East County. Here
we have a large retail corridor on Lone Tree Way that goes through
Antoioch and into Brentwood. In that corridor we have many new
commercial retail centers. Just down that Blvd. in Antioch there is
a Wal-Mart. Very close to that Wally is just about every type of
store you can think of has been built AFTER that store was built.
You name it and we probably have it and they are still building
more retail. That Wal-Mart is not the driving force here either.
All of the other stores are vibrant and filling their lots. Lowes,
Home Depot, Target, Orchard Supply Hardware, Staples, Office
Depot, Barns and Nobel, T.J. Max, Kohls, Safeway, Raley's,
Albertson's, Trader Joe's and on and on. The retail on that street
within three miles is huge. Wal-Mart is just another store and
another choice.

But all of these stores moved in AFTER Wally World. So the whole "Wal-Mart
drives away competition" argument is null and void.
I live in a city (Ventura) that is trying to keep Wal-Mart out. They would
rather have an empty dilapidated K-Mart building than Wal-Mart. It really
is sad when City governments decide who/what can go in as opposed to what
the thing looks like. In Ventura the space Wal-Mart wants is zoned retail
and they are willing to move into the existing building, but the city
council is still doing everything in their power to keep them away.
Meanwhile they gave huge tax breaks to a RangeRover/Jaguar dealership at the
automall.......
