OK, here is something I've been trying to do, thought it was possible, but
can't get it to work. This is kind of RV related since ad-hoc connections is
probably something other might want to do while RVing.

So lets say I get a wifi signal but others don't around me. Now let's say I
want friends to be able to connect to the internet and have the ability to
download upload shared files via wifi. Isn't that called an Ad Hoc
connection? How do I set that up? I went in and ran the Wireless Network
Setup wizard on both machines yet I still can't see my other laptop. What
the heck am I doing wrong? Maybe I didn't look hard enough, but I can't find
how to do this with a web search. This should be easy and maybe I'm
over-looking the obvious.. Do you know how to set this up?

Thanks,

Ben
Hi Ben,
I used to use an Ad Hoc connection from my laptop to my main computer
then to the internet over a dial up network. I was told it wasn't
possible but it is. There is a place on Microsoft's web site that
tells you how to do this using XP. I used to do it using 98SE which
took some measure of manually configuring the systems. The following
site lets you download the instructions for doing this using XP.

You use Ad Hoc mode when you want to communicate directly with another
computer without any access points such as routers. It's a quick easy
way for two computers with WiFi cards to communicate with each other.
Just put both computers in Ad Hoc mode using the software for the WiFi
card and they will see each other. If they don't make sure you have the
security settings correct for both computers both computers in Ad Hoc
mode and both using the same WiFi channel.

In order to allow one computer to connect to the internet and to
another computer using Ad Hoc mode you have to do some other steps to
set up the internet hookup. The site mentioned above should get you
going.

Infrastructure mode is used when one computer is using a router to
connect to the internet.

Hope this helps. Take care and Happy Campin...
