Heh. You may know a lot about networking, but you don't know what an
operating system is.

Stick a Knoppix CD into pretty much any PC computer and boot from the
CD. Knoppix will automatically install Linux. During the install, if
it sees an ethernet network connection it will automagically configure
a DHCP network connection over the ethernet port. I'd say that is
"built into the operating system". Do you disagree? If so, what is
your claim that this is incorrect?
