I built a Cantenna. I found a company that sold the N connector with
a suitable stub antenna attached for about the cost of a connector
alone so I bought a couple and tried it.
The classic Cantenna - a coffee can with a stub antenna mounted at the
rear - doesn't work very well. The L/D is too small. Adding 2-3 more
cans improves things remarkably but then you end up with a
bazooka-like device.
I've had much better luck with a commercially made Yagi. Easier to
store and deploy. there are plans on the net for making the same sort
of Yagi. I picked mine up at a hamfest for peanuts or else I'd have
made mine.

Thanks for all the replies. I went ahead and bought a Cantenna on eBay.
I read the reviews on some of the other products that were listed in the
thread too. The Hawking USB card with antenna is interesting but I kinda
wanted a separate antenna that I could disconnect so I wouldn't have to
bring a bulky thing with me and still have fairly good reception. The range
expander is a great idea but I read some really terrible reviews on it
(i.e., it's not plug it in and it works as it should be) and it's really not
intended to be used when traveling. The Hawking 6 dB gain antenna is nice
but the claims for the Cantenna are 12 dB gain.
BTW, any opinions on the Buffalo AirStation laptop wifi card (WLI-CB-G54HP)?
I need to buy a wifi card that accepts an antenna.
Ben.
