Re: WiFi Cantenna

I built a Cantenna. I found a company that sold the N connector with
a suitable stub antenna attached for about the cost of a connector
alone so I bought a couple and tried it.

The classic Cantenna - a coffee can with a stub antenna mounted at the
rear - doesn't work very well. The L/D is too small. Adding 2-3 more
cans improves things remarkably but then you end up with a
bazooka-like device.

I've had much better luck with a commercially made Yagi. Easier to
store and deploy. there are plans on the net for making the same sort
of Yagi. I picked mine up at a hamfest for peanuts or else I'd have
made mine.

Many time when traveling or parked in a campsite in the RV I've seen
open wifi nodes but the signal is so weak, it's either intermittent or
impossible to connect to. I was recently at a campground that I was
able to connect to a wifi node from an unknown source but really only
after dark so that got me thinking of other means to amplify the
signal. I think that when a signal is borderline, small weather or
atmospheric changed impact reception. When I looked into other means to
boast the signal, I found an antenna made for wifi called the Cantenna.
I was wondering if anyone here has used it. If so, what kind of results
have you gotten? Also, if you have used other methods to improve wifi
reception successfully (besides walking closer to the souce), please
share.
