It is a
disgraceful shame what a few angry old men (and women) have done to
this group.

The solution for that starts with each one of us

The solution really lies in using killfiles and scorefiles (xnews user)
to filter out the OT posts.

The problem is, not all off topic posts are bad. The just-completed
thread started by Frank Tabor, for instance, where he asked how to
record web video. I'm sure a lot of RVers were interested in that and
the topic is non-controversial. If I filter everything labeled "OT"
then I'm going to filter some interesting content. I'm also going to
miss some opportunities to help people, something I enjoy doing. I
have most of the worthless provocateurs filtered but that leaves those
who cause disruptions but occasionally have something interesting to
say (El Al, Frank T, Canoli, etc.)

The worse problem, something that no amount of filtering can fix, is
the chilling effect all this crap has on participation. I bet that
there are less than a dozen people who regularly contribute anything
of worth. That's pretty sad for a group that covers the world.
Literally. This group is becoming an like an inbred, incestuous W.Va
coal mining town with just a few people doing just a few other people
over and over. Wouldn't it be nice to have some new blood in this
group?

Maybe even, God forbid, some people from some RV companies? Given the
hatchet jobs regularly done to RV mfrs, I imagine their tenures would
be measured in milliseconds. Think how nice it's been to have Alan
the Onan man and Chris (who has apparently gotten fed up with the
group again) here to answer questions with authority. Wouldn't it be
nice to have some Generac, Honda, Suburban, Xantrex, Fleetwood, etc
people here? I certainly think so.

There are a few people whose lives are so empty and devoid of value
and/or so senile/demented that nothing anyone says will change their
behavior (sill, Boyd, a few others) so the best thing to do is to
killfile them.

For the rest of us, I just have to ask, why pull yourself down to
their level in the mud by replying? Especially in the political
arena, there is a vanishingly small likelihood of anyone changing
anyone's mind by arguing here. Even if someone says something that
you "know" (you actually don't unless you happen to be actively
involved in the issue but play along) is a lie, why bother arguing?
All you do is make the group unpleasant and make people lose respect
for your or even filter you. Then where are you when you need to ask
for advice on an RV or other legit matter.

Among the good things my momma taught me was to never talk politics or
religion in public. Great way to make enemies. That's probably the
best advice she ever gave me. A similar concept is to never say
anything on the net that you'd not say to someone's face. I very
seriously doubt that any of the rabble-rousers would speak to their
targets in person like they do here. At least not the second time! At
least until after they got new teeth! Finally, there's still that
concept of the Golden Rule that still works as well as it ever has.

Me, I'm going to start keeping track of the misbehavers and then
decline to provide any help or to answer any of their questions. If
the other people here who routinely provide advice and consultations
would do the same thing, I think this group would clean up fairly
quickly.
