It's just the polite thing to do. But not everybody on Usenet is polite

Much ado about nothing, me thinks.

I don't mind top-posting, since it generally is in response to a prior
post. If you've been following the thread, you know the reference
immediately: if you haven't, then you can either scroll down the post
or back up to the previously posted messages. Either way, it's not
difficult to follow along.

I find it easier to scan a whole bunch of posts if they're all formatted
the same way, that's all.

There's nothing impolite about it, merely
a personal idiosyncrasy which I don't find offensive.

I don't find it "offensive" either (did I say I do?), but polite people
in a group -- especially newcomers -- generally comport their behavior
to the style of the group rather than deliberately going against the
grain. As I said, though, not everybody here is polite.

... I don't feel it's my place in life
to instruct anyone how to format his contributions, even less so to
presume to speak for the majority.

Neither do I. And I didn't "instruct" anybody. I merely described the
generally prevailing format of this newsgroup to someone who asked.
Sorry you found that somehow objectionable, but it doesn't surprise me
that you did.
