I have only seen two rocket launches outside of military missles from
aircraft. (Ok, rockets from Cobra gunships as well) Both of them were
launchings of the old Honest John rocket system. A military base that I
lived at had regular open to the public Fire Power Demonstrations, where
they shot off a bunch of stuff for a couple of hours. One of those Honest
John launches was the last operation shot of the system before the Army
retired it. The audience sat less than 300 yards away from the launcher, and
it was LOUD.
