Actually, you were safer with the fuse. When it opened, it opened.
A circuit breaker can "fuse" itself closed - delivering all the amps the load wants, until the wires melt.


Anybody that simply relies on the house breaker box to protect from overloads is cruising for a bruising. Some level of understanding of current draw requirements is a good insurance policy.
