I would advise against the eMachine; after that your list becomes a Ford
versus Chevy sort of discussion and she would probably be better off looking
at price and features without worrying too much about brands. (The last Sony
I had required proprietary memory modules which annoyed the heck out of me,
but then that's part of why that was my *last* Sony. I don't know if they've
changed their ways since then.)

For some people an email and surfing machine is all they need. Other
people keep finding new uses for the thing. If he's really going to stick to
very basic uses just about any processor will be fine. If he's the sort that
might poke around and find new uses it gets to be like the RV people who are
trading up to a bigger model every year. For those guys a Pentium 4 machine
and they can add features as they need them. Photo and video processing, for
example, are places where many people find themselves wanting a better
processor.

Ya' know, I got so mad at Dell's customer dis-service that I swore off
buying from them. Since then I've bought two more Dells because I couldn't
beat the price. Other than taking care of warranty problems I don't need
customer service and haven't needed it for either of those machines. Reports
on their warranty service are mixed with some people reporting excellent
service and others reporting not so stellar service. If customer service is
an issue for your friend, if she buys a Dell it's best to buy it as a
business from their business division. That way they won't get shuttled off
to India. For home users there doesn't seem to be a dime's worth of
difference between one top line company and another. We have 4 Dells from 5
years to 3 months old and none of them have needed any repair work.
