I say try the suction cups on the inside of the windshield first.
My S&T gps came with one, and seems to work just fine placed on
the dash.

I had not realized that distance was a problem. I say avoid
extensions. Plus the "original connection" by which I presume
you mean the GPS itself, may not be weatherproof.

Save yourself a bunch of trouble and just lay it on the dash.
