I researched this a while back for my USB 1 connection, and I recall the
maximum length of a USB cable WITHOUT an active repeater in the line is
around 16 feet.

I'm not sure how this would vary if you use USB 2.

I googled and eventually found the answer...but not on the first try, or
even the second.
