I got a little creative I think when I ran power for our RV's.
We have a fifth wheel trailer that requires a 50 amp (two pole) service. My
wife also has a small PleasureWay (Dodge Sprinter chassis) that requires a
single pole 30 amp service. They are both parked in a mini "campsite" I
built on the side of our house.
I ran a 6/3 (with ground) power cable from a two pole, 50 amp GFI breaker in
the house power panel. I used type UF wire which is rated for direct
burial. Local code requires the cable to be buried at least 18".
The 6/3 cable terminates in an outdoor (rain proof) box mounted on a 6x6
pressure treated pole. The box contains a two pole 50 amp breaker, outlet
and a 30 amp single pole breaker and 30 amp RV type outlet. I also drove a
6' copper ground rod near the panel and grounded it as well to the box.
Using a clamp-on amp meter, I determined which leg of the 50 amp service
powers the air conditioning system on the fifth wheel. I then powered the
30 amp breaker (using #6 wire for hot and neutral) from the other 50 amp leg
to provide power to the 30 amp outlet.
We don't use all the power devices when the RV's are in the yard, but like
to keep the refrigerators on and the AC units set at about 78-80 degrees to
control humidity. Wired this way, the AC units in each RV are powered from
different legs of the 50 amp main feed.
