Around 55 years ago I watched my white grandmother,  curse violently at a
black women that didn't get off the sidewalk in a rural Virginia town to
make way for her.     It was one of the most defining moments of my life and
I thank God I saw that pathetic hate for what it was.    Since that time
when I was 6 or 7, I've been slightly active in civil rights movements.    I
was  a member of C.O.R.E. when I was in high school, I walked in a few
marches in the 60's.

I'm happy we have or first black president elect, but I didn't support him
because of his race.

I did so because he expresses the same ideas of what this country 'is' or
should be, as I feel.   I supported those ideas.   I will for life.

My country is, of course, it's geography and it's people.    But, those
things change and pass.    What makes this country so incredibly special
...  is ideals.

Let me let the President elect say it,

"And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as
bright - tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation
comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but
from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and
unyielding hope."

The last 7 years has seen our precious ideals suffer terribly under the name
of 'protecting our country'  ... there have been times when I was deeply
ashamed of what we were doing.   I've felt, and expressed, disgust with
those doing the damage.

But it's time to move on.     If we, all, are to save this country we can't
afford to hate each other for any reason, not race, not religion, not
politics.

This morning I hung our American flag outside my house and did so with tears
of pride in my eyes.

May God continue to bless our ideals, .... our country.

If there was a God, what makes you think it would view pointless
chauvinism benignly?

Hate, like charity, begins at home.
