I think I get it - The craft is travelling the same speed before and
after being influenced by Jupiter's gravity, but is travelling faster
while being influenced. Thereby making its outward trip take less time.

What is happening is that the spacecraft is "stealing" momentum from the
planet. Not to worry -- Jupiter has plenty of momentum to spare.

It changes velocity. Velocity is a vector quanity that has both
speed and direction.

As is momentum -- mv, mass times velocity.

Momentum is conserved. Jupiter loses some and the spacecraft gains an equal amount.

Speed is a scalar quanity.

Non sequitur.

The craft accelerates......which you may or may not have managed to comprehend once BJ pointed it out.

Why don't you go back and sit at the children's table.

Since the spacecraft's momentum increases (while its mass stays the same, neglecting relativistic effects), it obviously accelerates. Duh!
