It's simple. By adding the two digits and then subtracting the result, your answer is constrained to a certain set of numbers. For example, all the numbers in the range of 20 to 29 yield the result of 18. So, of the set of 100 2-digit numbers, there is a set of only 10 possible results.

are only 90 2-digit numbers.
