Another thing here in the West ... I know several watersheds where the PMDs tend to have an orange-ish overcast ( undercast? ) and given equally skilled presentation and similar patterns, a tiny bit of orange mixed into the dubbing will out perform flies without it. This won't be a 'big' difference, but it will be a difference. My feeling on color is that it is seldom 'very important' but often several 'not very important' things combined add up to big improvements in life. It's also seldom 'very important' to be able to make an honest 'fishing cast' an extra 3 feet than average, but when it is important, it's worth a fish. At the end of a day color isn't often going to be what makes one a 'hero' but it can add a fish or two
(There are a number of other explanation for your "orange" PMD example other than it being a better color match)
A question for you "color" guys......
Given that a trout is a VERY distant evolutionary relative and that they
see further into the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum and they are able
to perceive polarized light and they have a brain that processes the
input from the eye in a very different manner, and........... (or maybe you disagree with this?)
Why would you think that what you perceive as a color match is reliable for what a trout sees?
Larry, you're a dog person and I find this even more interesting coming from you. I'm sure you know first hand how incorrect and erroneous those kind of assumptions are.
