at this point I'm less worried about discomfort, than I don't like the feeling I'm on an assembly line ... this seems to be a trend in medical care, maybe an inevitable one as technical and specialized and expensive as it's become, but it bugs the crap out of this grumpy old man

it's an interesting difference among professionals. go to a dermatologist for skin keratosis or squamous cancer. if you get 10 minutes, you've got a good doctor...if longer, nominate him/her for a nobel. go to an accountant, an architect, a lawyer, an engineer, a therapist, a psychiatrist, a dietitian, for a conference and advice...usually you'll get an hour. you and your insurance company will pay more for 10 minutes with the dermatologist than you'll pay for the hour with the others in nc.

while i don't begrudge successful folks their rewards, nor paying the going-rate for stuff (including health care), i've always been troubled by the 34 year-old physician...a urologist...who had more than 300k in his contribution retirement plan, owned significant real estate property values, drove a mercedes, and had an annual income of 600k, but who thought 3k a month was adequate support for his children. that's the value judgment that occupies me.

as far as cost of the service, i guess one needs to know and understand the overhead of a particular medical or dental office before getting upset...i'm not sure i'd quibble about 900 dollars for a relatively painless root canal unless i felt the dentist was making an unseemly and usurious profit at my expense. (remember l. olivier's "is it safe?") i've spent less than an hour in the chair with a specialized dentist (oral surgeon removing wisdom teeth) and his assistants. i was very grateful for what they accomplished and happily paid the cost. how do you amortize the cost-benefit provided to you by any professional or other worker?
