You are describing on XP's fundamental flaws: that most users are set
up as Administrators and thus are entitled to change any file in the
system. A virus run under most users can do almost anything it wants
to. Vista is going to change this so that admin rights are not easily
granted, making it more like Unix based systems.

You can import almost everything from OE into Thunderbird. Likewise
your bookmarks can be imported to Firefox. It should be easy to move
even just to try out the alternatives.
