Here's the sequence:
John discovers really great place to camp.
Jim asks John where he camps. John tells him.
Jim tells two friends. Who tell two friends. Who etc.
Next month there are 57,387 people trying to camp
on that one site, and it's not exactly "secluded"
any more. That and the hotdog carts and icecream trucks.
Here's how to find good camp sites. Find the parks
and national forests and public lands. Often these
are listed on the net. Go try one. If you like it,
make note of where it is and how to get there. If it's
*really* nice, keep it for yourself, and possibly your
best friend in the world and your close relatives.
Be prepared for it to be crowded within a few months.
To find the really great spots, you need to hike in.
The longer the hike, the better. Personally, if you
can get a car to the camp site, I don't call it secluded.
Secluded is when you can imagine you are the first
human in a couple years to be there. When you have
to actually move old fallen wood off the site to put
down your tent. When there's bear and cougar tracks
in the undergrowth. When there are three year old
trees growing in the middle of the trail. When the
squirrels don't look for handouts because they don't
know what a human is. And when you don't find a single
bit of litter. That's secluded.
