The exhibit itself talks about the arrival of chocolate in Europe in
the 16th century (barely in time to be period) and what happened to it
afterwards.

Let's be careful. Just because you can find one instance of
<thing> on December 31, 1599, at 11:59 pm in an isolated mountain
village in the Pyrenees, that doesn't make it mainstream. In other
words, chocolate layer cake at a Saxon feast is still out.
