My astrophysics text has an equation for dT/dr, through the convection
layer of the sun, due to thermal buoyancy. Now, dT/dr is one of the most
important terms in the heat convection equation, DT/Dt = alpha Del^2(T),
where D/Dt = partial_t + v dot grad. So I can equate d/dr to partial_r and
put that into the heat equation, giving me an expression for v_r as an
output.
But this is only part of the solution, because the flow is three
dimensional, and the theta and phi components can't be ignored. There are
coriolis forces from outward flow in a rotating body, but the interior flow
field is almost certainly sheared, just as the solar surface shows
differential rotation.
So I can't use a rigid body expression for the coriolis force, and
therefore, wouldn't have the necessary inputs into that equation. I'm
wondering if I can take the observed flow field on the surface of the sun
as an input, inspead of a theoretical model, and then work
backward,to get the interior flow field.

Yeah, an' ain't that strange!
Best idea: abolish the sun!
