What is the ultimate basis of reality? Admittedly a very interesting

intellectually interesting topics. And these topics can be discussed
in some depth.
Even though I appear here very often as a "troll"---sometimes I'm
really trolling just to start a good argument. But the range of
topics has become too small recently.

So let's discuss other stuff, like,

1). Do remedial education programs work.

2). What about "tiered" education in Hi School...

etc etc.

No, let's discuss why the majority of NG participants, in ROM and
elsewhere, would rather debate with a provocative nutjob than with a
sensible person.

Because they're easy?

They appear easy, based on the incorrect assumption that beneath the
craziness there is a normal capacity for reason. But actually the
craziness goes all the way down, so no attempt at reasoning makes any
difference. Thus, there is no quick victory, and the thread goes on
and on without resolution, reasoning pretty soon giving way to abuse.

Eventually fatigue sets in, and the thread ends. However, the nutbag
loves the attention, so pretty soon he posts again. The non-nutbag
responds, having learnt nothing from the earlier experience, and on it
goes.

It is an interesting question - which one is really nuts?- Hide quoted text -

Someone once said something like, "An opinion not reached by reason
cannot be changed by reason." Maybe someone can give me the correct
quote.
A "nutbag" can pose an interesting question. I heard of a physics
convention where two physicists were arguing whether a theory was
"crazy enough" to advance understanding.
But even the smartest person only has one or two "crazy" ideas a
month. Mitch's ideas are not crazy enough----they're similar to ideas
like "The atom is a little solar system." And he posts five of six a
day.
