36th Poem of the Poetropolis

Ode To The Pondering Poodle
===========================

Many get sold with older age,
attempt that extra step into the shade
where dark forces prowl
wearing hooded cloaks and hidden scowls, and hold
walking sticks to harvest for the one-eyed wooden owl,
wrong-wandered game.

A distant memory now, the manifold refuge
of pocket posies, cartwheels and knees rescued
from buckle on the playground centrifuge
- all members of the merry circle set
formulated for lifting cherubs to recess peals
and away from the weight of being still in the classroom.
Over and over and over again but back
to the beginning at the end, the starting place:
a comfort plank for those feeding metal faces
to the piggy bank in hopes of hearing the sound
of its hunger quenched.
The pendulum of innocence, alas, hangs
motionless inside my brain
in a three-dimensional triangulate frame
housing painted wagons, magic dragons,
and swords of stainless foil and duct tape.

As the morning skips from the poodle's disdain
to noon inside the pelting rain,
inside still, the window pane - battered but not shattered -
the urge to step out and face the dark forces
in their domain
is greater than the urge to remain within and watch
the rule of the inclement reign,
but how to make the charge towards the hydrant red in the waters shed?
It's hard to think with bladder brain.

Many get sold with older age;
get molded with each step taken towards the off-stage,
get cold from leaving the focussed warmth
of the spotlight; but being told
over and over and over again of this, their time in space,
they stroll, uneasily, towards their fate.

To you who refuse to stray
from the evergreen of being human, free, fair, and forever young;
who reject the bribes and poisoned ways of the desert barons,
the men of cactus orient;
to those of us who are bold to the bone and undaunted
by the gale that seeks to rip our sails
and suck our final breath;
the finest bottle of evergrape, I raise.
