New music student, post-retirement. Forgive me if these questions are
newbie, but my instructor isn't available, and this is bothering me.
I was writing out my A triads for maj, min, aug, and dim. When I got
to aug, I realised that I was going to have a troubling problem with
transcribing the notes on musical staff.
The notes I end up with on the staff are A, C#, and E, but how do I
augment the 5th?
Does it become E#?
Yes.
If so, how does that appear on musical staff? As
E#, or as F?
As E# when you're writing a harmony test or when you need to be
"right". Sometimes though as F, if it will help musicians to be able to
sight read your music better. The latter depends on the specific
harmonic environment of a specific piece of music.
If it shows up on the staff as F, wouldn't that make it a diminished
sixth rather than an augmented 5th?
Yes. But if it makes the music easier to sight read it might be worth
making that little grammatical error.
BTW If you do write it as F then it's really an F+ triad.
I know these are small details, but I like to have a good
understanding of what I'm doing to avoid practicing and repeating
mistakes. I'm sure to run into these same problems in other roots, so
I'd like to get a better idea what I'm doing.
Thank you in advance.

Generally speaking, MUSICIANS would play it right more often if it was
written "Right"
