Question:
I'm trying to figure out the 2nd bar of the Messiah Sinfony. Keep in
mind I'm using a choral reduction, too. :( We're in Em, and I have
the first bar as:
Em, Am6/4, Em 6/4, B7
The 2nd bar has a chord voiced as (from bass to soprano):
B B F# D#; which moves to:
G B E C#. The C# then moves to B; then:
F# B B G; then
E E G B, leading to the 3rd bar:
A# E C# G.

In the second bar 2nd beat,
Why did you choose C# over B? C# could be a passing tone.
This makes the chord simply Em in first inv.
The chord after it looks to be Gmaj7 in 3rd inv with the F# acting as a
passing tone then resolving
My guess is that its B7(there is no 7th but its probably implied from the
previous beat), Em6, Gmaj4/2, Em A#dim7.
They way I see it is that the first bar is really just all Em and the second
is B7 for second bar, A#dim7 & F#7 for the third, B7 & G for the 4th and
cadencing on C for the 5th bar. I could be wrong though?
All those other harmonies that are formed by eighth notes just seem to be
more like pickups into the next chord rather that complete units by
themselfs. I'm not saying you cannot analyze them but if I'm right then you
should take into account the root to make more sense of whats going on. What
I see is that the harmonic rhythm seems more to be in 2 than 4 in the first
phrase.
What I would say for the second bar is that its V I6 IIImaj7 I and then for
the third bar its viio7/V viio7 then V V/VI and for the 5th bar VI.
Not sure how correct that is but hopefully someone that knows will chime in.
