Yes, but the issue here is that I store the recording on a HD so I have
to distinguish them in a good way. If I write a small canon like piece
and just call it canon.mp3 then if I write another canon I have to give
it another name ;/ I suppose calling it canon 1.mp3, etc... works but
I'd also like to keep the order in which I wrote them somehow in the
name(so I have some order of progression of how my music is changing).
If you do it on computer, simply sort them by date created :-)
Of course you could just simply append the date to the file name.

Also, I don't think it would do me any good to name my canon something
like "Explosions in extacy.mp3" because its just a canon ;) Very simple
one that I just wrote for learning experiences and it doesn't have a
title and I don't think giving it some arbitrary title does any good.
(gives it to much extramusical meaning)
Interestingly, I'm giving finals in my MIDI class and in just checking
over the file names, some people just put "Final Project", and others put
"On Seeing the Man in the Moon" in a folder called Final Project. Even
though a lot of times they're not masterworks and mostly experiments, I'm
always astounded by the imaginative titles I see. I mean, you probably
don't want to name your piece "The Greatest Piece Ever" if it's not. But
likewise, I don't see anything wrong with naming things like "Canon:
12.12.07" or something.
Yeah. I'm going to try to do the date thing. I'm not sure if the dates are
correct though but since I just have a few files and just one of each I can
probably make them up(I can get reasonably close). In my case when they were
created is more important so the date thing seems better.
Thanks again,
Jon
Another idea along the same lines is to use folders to do some of your
sorting for you. If you write a "piece in A" put it into a folder with
the day-number on it, put that into a month-folder, and that into a
year-folder.
2007
+- 04
+- 30
+- Piece in A
Piece in B
&c.
It's slightly more cumbersome but saves having to append the date to
the file-name. If you end up writing two pieces in A on any one given
day given them a subscript like 000, 001, &c. (e.g. "Piece in A.
000.mid", "Piece in A.001.mid" &c).
