It's important to define "Music" before you can answer this.

"Sound" can be described completely by using only intensity as a function
of time.

But what many folks have done, with some degree of success is to isolate
parameters that can produce and CONTROL THE CHOICE of such a wave , as the
probability of producing "music" from just any wave is zero. (actually!!) ,
as the
Music waves have "Zero Measure" in the set of all sound waves, but they DO
exist.

The question of what qualifies a "Music" is perhaps way beyond the scope of
what you are looking for.

MIDI was developed with such a choice of basic parameters in mind.

For a PARTICULAR "Voice" the basics are
Which note?
is it on or off?
How loud?
(among others)

You might find it fun to see how absolutely marvelous "Voices" can be
created by FM systhesis or even Old-Fashioned Moog-style Sine curve
addition synthesis.

You can see that the MIDI just controls the existence and a few qualities of
a particular voice, and then hands over the control of the production of the
voice to the Synthesizer, but MIDI can also control the manipulation by
such goodies as pitch bend. vibrato, etc.

In essence, I don't think that there are any set of command variables that
represent a Basic Choice for the production of music, but the ones you
mentioned are usually considered as necessary, but rarely sufficient.
As always there is a compromise to be made between versitility and
complexity.

The main idea is to have fun and really enjoy what you are doing.

I usually caution people who dabble in understanding Music Technology to
GET THE BASICS and try a buncha stuff.
It is easy to spend decades trying to build a Ferari by trial and error and
to re-invent the wheel, so to speak.
