Carnival Center for the Performing Arts and Ayabonmbe present
Refugee: A Musical of Freedom and Resistance (Play / Theater)
World Premiere! Marc Joseph's new work is a Haitian-and-hip-hop
flavored play with song-and dance interludes, about fleeing home in
search of freedom and adapting to a strange new land called Miami. A
"Miami Made" Carnival Center commission, Refugee is a stirring tale-at
once terrifying and bleak, but full of hope, inspiration, and triumph.
Ludovic, a singer of protest songs, escapes the political oppression
of his native Haiti, only to find indifference, confusion, hostility
and loneliness on U.S. shores. It's a personal story that Joseph
himself has lived, but one that millions of Americans can call their
own.

Youssou N'Dour & the Super Etoile of Dakar - Legendary Senegalese star
Youssou N'Dour returns to Miami, and this concert features N'Dour's
African big band, the Super Etoile of Dakar.
Time magazine 2007 list of 100 most influential Peoplewww.time.com/time/specials/2007/time100/article/0,28804,1595326_15953...
This four-time Grammy winner, Africa's greatest star and "the
protector of the Dakar Overgroove", returns to the US with his big
band, the Super Etoile.

Senegalese popular music known in the Wolof language as mbalax, an
enchanting blend of Senegal's traditional percussion and griot singing
with Afro-Cuban and indigenous dance flavors, has found in N'Dour both
its enduring symbol and its hardiest innovator. N'Dour (born in 1959
in Dakar), a vocal artist with incredible range and poise, has made
mbalax famous throughout the world in more than twenty years of
touring outside of Senegal with his band. The Super Etoile "plays with
a joyous precision", The Los Angeles Times noted, and The (London)
Guardian has called their music "the finest example yet of the meeting
of African and Western music: wholesome, urgent and thoughtful".

Frequent collaborator Peter Gabriel himself so succinctly put it,
"Youssou N'Dour is now one of the best loved voices in the world".
Another commentator has said that N'Dour's music "encourages you to
think globally while dancing locally". Yet for all of its openness
toward other musical cultures, for all of his wit and cosmopolitan
grace, mbalax remains an edgy, idiosyncratic music now so much a part
of the Senegalese national identity as to be almost indistinguishable
from it. N'Dour consequently finds himself nothing less than a
cultural icon in his country and in the Senegalese and West African
diaspora, including in the United States. Throughout an astonishing
international career, N'Dour's rootedness in Senegalese dance music
and singing remains the hallmark of his musical personality.

The 2007 tour features the beloved big band that has toured with
N'Dour for two decades - the mighty engine behind the all-night sweat-
soaked parties in Dakar, Paris and New York City.

Based on Debra Ehrhardt's dramatic real life escape from revolution-
torn Jamaica in the 1970s, this powerful one-woman show takes
audiences along on her roller coaster ride to America. Overcoming
poverty, prison time, rape and near death in a dangerous caper aided
by the unwitting help of an infatuated CIA agent, Ehrhardt's gripping
ordeal provides a glimpse into what many endure on the path to
fulfilling their lifelong dream of a better life in America. "A
terrific story," says LA WEEKLY, "suspenseful enough for a thriller,
and deliciously funny." Jamaica, Farewell will make you laugh, cry and
applaud the persistence of the human spirit. May contain Adult

South Florida Poetry Fiesta, a nonprofit organization presents 'WORD
DAY', a day of "Expression of art in all form", to raise funds to
continue the mission of 'Solidifying Communities through the arts'.
This year's event, the 3rd of its kind will definitely be the one to
resurrect the organization's mission. In preparation, two open-mikes
have been scheduled to include the community's talents on the same
stage with many great 'veterans'.

At 2pm to 6pm: Art exhibits, cd's, books as well as artistic creations
will be on display and some items will be considered as memorabilia
and will be for sale.
At 6pm-11pm: expression of arts in the forms of Poetry, Positive
Music, and Visual Arts will be taking the stage for show time.

At 11pm-2am: Musical segment

The events headliner, international renowned Poet, Author, Historian
and actor Mutabaruka, said when contacted for this year's show 'if the
date is free I will say YES", and that he did indeed, his name speaks
for itself, which means 'always victorious'. Accompanying him on stage
will be Daddy Owen, poet and educator, Sashquash, lyrical musician,
Tafari, the son of legendary Big Youth, Voyager Morgan, D'merge,
Vinegar, Malachi, Baby Vinegar and lot more! Other Artist have also
been invited to give the patrons a musical segment between 11 pm and 2
am includes Tarus Riley and Niyorah, whose lyrical content simply
'fits' the occasion. "We are looking to resurrect a vision created in
2003 to help Elementary Education and Our communities worldwide" says
Terrence Davis Director of SFPF "We have very competent community
activists on our Board who have become united to see this vision a
success and we are thrilled to pass on the benefits to the community
with a FREE event of this caliber". Emcees include Mikey Mike from
93.5 Real Deal Radio and Ras Isaiah from 101.1 DaOne Radio and Mr.
Linguistic.

As Tony rebel says "Not everything that is popular is right and not
everything right is popular, so we say to people who claim to be
preachers, teachers, motivators and inspirers - your examples will not
be ignored so be careful. On the other hand instead of fighting the
bad - go ahead and promote what is good, no one who promotes darkness
wins. The only way to win is to create a light and shine in it." And
this is exactly what The South Florida Poetry Fiesta promises to
deliver.
Sponsors and Artists are still being sought; let's come together and
make this a reality.

Lanzallamas
Lanzallamas Monofonica is a 7 piece ensemble charged with melodic fire
and global rhythmical chemistry. The palette consists of a wide array
of percussive instruments such as the cajon, steel pan, tumbas,
timbalitos, Afro-Brazilian hand percussion and drumset. Elegant layers
of acoustic guitar, cuatro, violin, and piano complement and enrich
the sonic concept, with the heartbeat of the bass and breath of the
flugle horn to deliver a very unique sound. Simple and memorable
melodies are brought to life within the lyrics, focused on unity and
love, are presented in multiple languages including Spanish, English,
Portuguese and Serbian. The mission is clear; to create music of a
"Monophonic Essence" - the one sound that encompasses all. Lanzallamas
Monofonica is a band of substance with a skin of upbeat, appealing

MARIA MAGDALENA CAMPOS-PONS: EVERYTHING IS SEPARATED BY WATER
(Gertrude Silverstone Muss Gallery)
This exhibition will feature approximately 17 major works that include
mixed media installations and large-format Polaroid photographs. This
body of work spans 15 years (1990-2005), and explores the artist's
ancestral displacement from Africa, her self-imposed exile from Cuba,
and her experience as an Afro-Cuban woman living in North America. On
view through November 11, 2007, this traveling exhibition is the first
in-depth view of Campos-Pons's artistic career, and is accompanied by
a fully-illustrated catalogue, the first to explore her work.
