But, isn't "listening to" how we "use" music?

I agree with Wes' point that you can make as many copies for personal
use as you want but that you lose the right to listen to them when you
sell the original.

But that may only go if you "sell" it.

If you made copies of 20 CDs and had them in your car, your house
burns down and all 20 are destroyed. Do you still have a license to
listen to those copies?

Since you may not be able to prove that you indeed bought them, how
would the "music police" even know how to handle that one?

If I sell any COPIES of said CDs, I am in violation of the copyright
law.

Software is much more specific, unless you have licenses for multiple
PCs. The usual status quo is to install it on one PC only. My
anti-virus / spyware / etc. suite allows me to have it installed on 3
home PCs, without purchasing extra licenses. So, if I sold the
original software or stopped using this specific ISP, who provides the
protection suite, I "should" remove it from said PCs.

But - the same rule still applies if your house burnt down. How can
anyone truly know if you have a legit copy or not?

Only you can. I don't think it's about the money $$$, it's about if
one can live with it or not.

I most assuredly can.
