May I be the first to point out that by saying this, as you did :

Okay guys/gals - this is the deal. I'll reply to discussion/debate
arising out of the newsletter. Everything else, I'll ignore.

Then writing the spiel below (as you did), you have done one of two
things (or possibly both). A) lied. B) Just confirmed that you're
really only here to talk about you. Not that we didn't know this. But
anyway...

various progressive rock forums we've had 183 hits (including 14
yesterday). In the past, the only place we put the link was in this
forum and the hits to the news page still rose above 100. Perhaps the
20:1 ratio claim is stretching it (typically marketing texts put the
ratio nearer 10:1). However, many forums now show both the number of
replies and the number of views. Based on that, I would say the ratio

At Progressive Ears, there have been over 90 replies (which suggests
there have been nearly 1000 views), mostly talking about the topic of
truth, some complaining about SPAM, some challenging the anti-SPAMers
to show more tolerance. In that thread, a few people have defended
the newsletter again those trying to suppress debate. I also had an
interesting private message from a moderator encouraging me to
continue debate the attacks because the moderators do appreciate the
efforts I'm making.
Is this marketing? To that I would say 'Yes' and No'. On one level,
I'm just sharing news. People here, from time to time, probably share
personal or work related news and (probably) don't get called SPAMers
for doing so. On another level, it is marketing, but (in my mind)
more for contemporary progressive rock rather than myself per se. I'm
conscious that for the music to gather a following it must find fans
inside the prog rock community. However, to raise the profile of prog
rock generally, there need to be artists to take on the challenge of
finding fans who typically listen to other genres. That's why we put
our music onto SoundClick and RadioIndy. In those environments we
have to compete in the charts with all other types of music.
We now put links to the newsletter here, in the SoundClick 'Rock'
forum, Magles International Music Forum, Progressive Ears as well as
mailing it directly to customers, reviewers, distributors of rock
music, shops in the UK and various media people. This month I tried
MySpace as well (have about 80 'friends') there and it generated a
measurable response and increase in interest.
I don't see myself as a champion of Protos (or Rory Ridley-Duff) so
much as a champion of the genre. At the moment, the best opportunity
to raise the profile of the genre is to draw attention to the level of
interest that has been shown at SoundClick (in 'Rory Ridley-Duff'
music) and the interest in Japan (mainly, but not exclusively for
Protos's music). The latest surprise is being featured on Argentinian
TV (I have few detail other than the show producer got phone/e-mails
asking for more information. We've shipped copies of all the album
for them to show and feature on new shows).
Long term, I'd like to give up consultancy work and spend some of my
time writing, and some promoting other artists (and helping them get
good recordings/albums the attention they deserve). There is personal
interest in this, both artistically and financially, of course. I've
never been money driven, but there is this idea in the back of my head
that this is the best pension plan I've come up with....only 20 years
to go to retirement.
So, there you have it. Slap me down for all this if you wish. I'll
still cary on.
