Believe it or not, I have had fantastic results with *toothpaste* !! A
friend recommended it to me when I complained about wrecking a disc by
closing the CD player door with the disc not inserted properly (resulting in
two scratches that made the CD unplayable). I didn't actually think it
would work but I figured that as the disc was stuffed anyway I'd give it a
go.
What you do is get just a tiny dob of toothpaste on a clean lint-free cloth
(I used a hankerchief), and gently polish the scratched area. This can take
a few minutes depending on how bad the scratch is. You then clean the disc
with a moist clean cloth to remove the remaining toothpaste (from the inside
to the edge, like they recommend).
In my case (and much to my amazement), it completely polished out the
scratches and now the disc plays perfectly. I have tried toothpaste on
another disc since then and also gotten a perfect playing result. I am not
sure if this would work or be practicle on very deep scratches, or where the
plastic has split. But for scuffs and even moderately deep scratches (ones
that render the disc unreadable) toothpaste is well worth a shot.
Good luck and let me know if it worked for you too!
Jason.
