Here is a quick explanation of Trey anastasio's lyrics.
AC/DC Bag
This is treys rant about how being an A at a skill or being a C at a
skill is always better than a B but Trey doesnt like crew cuts so he
calls those people Cs and relates them to Ds in the latter part of
the
rant.  Of course the Bag is what your pursuit or focus is on.  Its
also doubled metaphorically to suggest electronics which is what they
play their guitars and music with.  It also suggests that an A type
personality with a crew cut could and is by all means encouraged to
do
so climb capital hill in good ole Washington DC to further Treys main
agenda which is to put more drugs into his system thus enabling him
to
write such a whimsical tune.  Moral Trey is a dickhead and he likes
dickheads that like him.

David Bowie
This is a cleverly disguised tune about who originally wrote most of
the Grateful Dead's songs.  John Barlow.  Hence the reference David
Bowie which is if you'll remember correctly from boy scouts, a barlow
knife and a bowie knife are similar and is meant as a tool.  But the
only tool in this case is Trey and the UB40 reference is to show
deference to the generation gap there, also referring to the reggae
hit Red Red Wine which is a reference the Grateful Dead used to make
to drugs, example "We can share the women we can share the wine"

Golgi Apparatus

This song is about Treys conception of his fly by night and under the
radar super stealth mode concert plans.  He talks about looking into
the microscope and seeing golgi apparatus.  He means by this of course
singing into the microphone.  The golgi apparatus is a grammy or some
other industry trophy or award most likely in the shape of a man
gilded in fake gold.  Hence the term golgi.  The scope of of the
microscope means that for radio etc there isnt such a wide variety.
Run to the light middle of the night, couldnt get it wrong, speaks of
Treys warm wishes for you.  Lysosome cause he runs so fast, runs like
a junkyard dog with a brain of brass.  If you want the truth about
Lysosome you should look it up on Wikipedia.  Trey saws you with a
ticket stub in your hand.  This speaks of Treys plan of hippies
undergoing mitosis to divide and conquer and most importantly pay for
concert tickets.

Once again Trey appears to be motivated by the lowest common
denominator.

An excerpt from The Best Short Stories of Mark Twain

Will the reader please to cast his eye over the following verses and
see if he can discover anything harmful in them?

Conductor when you recieve a fare
Punch in the presence of the passenjare
A blue trip slip for an eight - cent fare
A buff trip slip for a six cent fare
A pink trip slip for a three - cent fare,
Punch in the presence of the passenjare

Punch brothers! punch with care!
Punch in the presence of the passenjare!

So run when you here those words

It is my belief that Mark Twain wrote this while he was a paddle boat
captain, and due to his opposition of slavery he is describing that
selling different fares to different color skinned people or any
different kind of people such as women even, such as when he states "A
buff trip slip for a six cent fare" is immoral and demands to be dealt
with.  Hence the term punch which is noble enough but doesn't nearly
scratch the surface of race and gender issues such as segragation in
the South and aparthetheid in South Africa.  From time to time these
issues need to be spoke out about and other times fought for.

I have heard that Trey used to make some racial jokes backstage from
time to time.  Whether or not someone presents themself like that is
up to the individual but definetly does not deserve a following.

The hero of any person in a story is one that fights for other peoples
rights because he is capable of it due to his talents and takes it on
because he has already had his rights fought for and won.  Such as
Mark Twain or Benjamin Franklin.  Its something he does not beyond his
own born into freedom, choice of religion, pursuit of happiness those
are the inailiable rights that a freedom fighter possess.  He fights
to transfer his god given and patriotic rights to others in the past
within our country and now beyond our borders.  They reason being is
that when we now fight for freedom beyond our borders it is the meek
person we fight for.  The meaning inailable human rights applies to
what we as America believe every man to possess.  In other oppressed
dictatorships, we fight for these inailable rights and freedom of
religion.  We don't care that after we win (which is our goal) in the
gulf war the people will keep their own religion.  We fight for the
meek person who has had their inailiable rights oppressed, not taken
away.  So it becomes a question if you ever see the noble issue  of
Mark Twains poem applied in a setting with religion  being addressed.
As an American Mark Twain is suggesting in these words that the right
to freedom of religion has already been won.  He doesn't care about
that because that is a non issue within our borders and within our
philosophy to bring up.  So if you ever see this thought applied
within our border and alludes to the connection of religion and
money.  His thoughts and wishes were not upheld.  And if it is ever
presented in that context as a question, the writer has actually
reduced the amount of freedom for everybody because it doesn't just go
against common sense its not just the opposite of freedom.  Its the
opposite of common sense and vastly Its the opposite of humor.  So It
goes to show you those people who would present this in a whimsical
comedic way within our borders attributed to both religion and money
aren't very funny at all and thats the punchline.- Hide quoted text -
