Thanks guys! We have a D-link wireless router with 4 ethernet ports. 1

the #2 port; will the IP address situation just take care of itself at
that point?
Yes. Each computer will get an IP address of 192.168.0.xxx where xxx is some unique number. You'll need to note that number (start > run > cmd > ipconfig) when you open up ports for bit torrent and other things that you want to allow access.
Basically, the firewall doesn't let in any incoming data unless you say it's okay. For example, when you tell your browser to go to www.google.com, the firewall lets www.google.com send data back to you, but some random guy trying to pry into your machine won't have any luck since you didn't give him permission.
Your bit torrent client will tell you in the preferences what port or range of ports it uses; if you don't open them on your firewall your speeds will be very slow. Use this site to find out how to configure your firewall:
http://portforward.com/routers.htm
And make sure you have the latest firmware for your model from www.dlink.com
