Yeah, but the original poster referenced McCartney/Lennon (Beatles) and
Paul Simon (Simon and Garfunkel, duh). Since the definition of
singer/songwriter (obviously not the literal definition) is so loose, I
used the context of his post to guess what HIS definition is, which it
seems includes singer/songwriters who front bands, which is why I
included The Shins. I mean, what makes "the Shins" IS James Mercer's
songwriting even if it is played with a band. As the original poster
was talking about, it's not about the sound, but more the lyrics, the
story, the emotion, etc.
Even yourself include Tweedy who isn't a solo artist. That's what I
mean when I say that the idea of a singer/songwriter is different for
everyone.
