computer question

my ethernet card died. so i put in another one but my computer won't
recognize it, or another one i tried. they both light up, and they both make
my dsl modem "ethernet" light go on, unlike the dead one, so i'm pretty sure
both cards work. i can't even enable them because they don't show up in the
device manager. i haven't installed both at the same time, i've tried them
one at a time.

any advice?
